Explore the world in a creative and caring environment

Our philosophy is that every child is unique and we personalise learning depending on each child. We follow children’s interests to springboard our topics for learning as we believe that children learn best when we follow their lead.

Our foundation curriculum follows the UK Early Years Foundation Stage and fosters knowledge, problem solving, social, and other important skills. Children are exposed to the basic building blocks of learning, preparing them for the next steps in their education. We want our young children to develop the skills, confidence and understanding they need. while familiarising themselves with their local community.

Three Primary Areas of Learning

  • Communication and Language – We offer children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.
  • Physical Development – We provide opportunities for children develop their fine and gross motor skills; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. We also focus on health and self care and how to manage independence with their own self care.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – We help children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings.

Four Specific Areas of Learning

  • Literacy Development – We give children access to a wide range of reading materials to ignite their interest in literacy and encourage children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write.
  • Mathematics – We provide children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, and learning about shapes, space, and measure
  • Understanding the World – We guide children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment
  • Expressive Arts and Design – We enable children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through the medium of art and design

Characteristics of Effective Learning

  • Playing and exploring
  • Finding out and exploring
  • Playing with what they know
  • Being willing to ‘have a go.’

Our classrooms and learning environment actively encourage and offer children the opportunity to play and explore. We believe that children need to be able to play, explore and investigate using open-ended resources and encourage children to use their imagination.

Active learning

  • Being involved and concentrating
  • Keeping trying
  • Enjoying achieving what they set out to do

Children demonstrate active learning when engaging in activities that require them to use their mental abilities. We celebrate when children show a can-do attitude when attempting to do a task and we tune into children’s interests and keep this at the heart of our teaching. We know that creating an environment that is led by children’s interest will encourage children to become active learners.

Creating and thinking critically

  • Having their own ideas
  • Making links
  • Choosing ways to do things

For children to be creative and critically think, we believe that practitioners need to provide children with lots of opportunities to work things out on their own or with others; this will develop their problem solving skills. We use our expertise as practitioners to know when to intervene and when to scaffold children’s learning. As children begin to engage fully in activities, they will start asking questions about how things work, and we understand the importance and value of asking open-ended questions to help extend the learning opportunities.
